Parking-Free
With less than 150 parking spots and as many as 1,500 people visiting on a summer weekend day, parking fills up fast. Parking is only allowed in designated spots — if no spots are available, visitors are asked to return at a later time.
Park staff recommends visiting mid-week or avoiding the peak window of 11 AM–4 PM on weekends.

Visitor’s Center & Nature Center
The Visitor Center and Nature Cener is located at the intersection of Caves Rd and 98th Street — right at the park entrance, making it easy to find on your way in. Inside, visitors can learn how the caves formed from limestone geology, displays on the history of Maquoketa Caves, view archaeological artifacts such as pottery, tools, and stone projectile points, and experience a virtual cave tour video ideal for those with limited mobility or who prefer a mud-free exploration.

Souveniour Shop
Grab a piece of your Maquoketa Caves adventure to take home!
Located at the Lower Shelter/Park Store, in the heart of the park near the cave entrances, the souvenir shop offers apparel, postcards, magnets, and cave-themed keepsakes, along with cave-exploring essentials like flashlights and snacks to keep you fueled and ready for your trip underground.
Please note that hours vary by season — it's generally open Friday through Sunday.

Bathrooms
Accessible, modern restrooms are located at the Visitor Center, at the Lower Shelter/Park Store, and at the Picnic Shelter Area.
Pets
Privately owned animals shall be kept on a leash with a maximum length of six feet, or be kept confined. Animals are not allowed to run at large. Pets shall not be left unattended in campgrounds.
Accessibility
Lower Shelter/Souvenir Shop: Located in the heart of the park near the cave entrances, the Lower Shelter/Souvenir is accessible and has accessible parking, and a modern restroom nearby.
Visitor Center & Nature Center: Accessible parking and restrooms can be found near the park entrance at the Visitor Center & Nature Center, which is open seasonally and run by volunteers. Hours are typically 9 am - 5 pm Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends.
Trails: The trail system at Maquoketa Caves is not accessible due to steep inclines, rocky terrain, and staircases.

Bats
Bats play a critical role in keeping the caves and surrounding environment at Maquoketa Caves State Park healthy and balanced. Their importance goes well beyond just living in the caves—they are key contributors to the entire ecosystem.
They are being threatened by a disease called white-nose syndrome and the fungus could be hitching a ride on you or your gear.
How you can help?
Respect cave closures and posted signs, especially during winter months
Do not enter gated or restricted caves
Stay on designated trails and avoid disturbing roosting areas
Never touch bats, living or dead
Clean footwear and gear before and after visiting caves to prevent spreading fungal spores
